The Foundations of Aikido are the:
(i) martial/conflict principles that are required when dealing with conflict. These permeate everything we do and must be evident in all our actions and demonstrated in our techniques (when either demonstrated in Aikido practice or when utilised, adapted, improvised in actual real situations);
(ii) The base forms or techniques in Tai-jutsu practised to develop and understand the above. Techniques are merely a vehicle to acquiring an understanding and an ability to use the foundation principles (as in (i) above).
(iii) The "method" of Aiki-ken and Aiki-jo.
FOUNDATION PRINCIPLES/ELEMENTS SHISEI KOKYU KAMAE MA-AI IRIMI/TENKAN URA/OMOTE TAI SABAKI ATEMI KOKYU RYOKU
BASE FORMS/TECHNIQUES (in Omote & Ura) IKKYO NIKKYO SANKYO YONKYO IRIMI NAGE SHIHO NAGE KOTE GAESHI KAITEN NAGE TENCHI NAGE
Remember the elements and base techniques are there to teach the foundations of Aikido.
Once the foundation is established all techniques and their variations can be or are mastered.

Thank you for this. I think I'm familiar with all the rest, but could you explain Shisei? I'm not sure what it refers to?

could you explain Shisei? I'm not sure what it refers to? Shisei is translated into English as "attitude" and "position" - Shi means "form", "figure", "stature" and Sei means "Energy", "Vigour" and "Vivacity".
Shisei is an internal and external attribute - good form, deportment, bearing and also an internal force visible externally. Nobuyoshi Tamura Shihan (Voarino Shihan's first Teacher) describes it as "the vitality of a child is apparent from its vivacity, its bright eyes and active moment".
The Samurai and Master of the sword Miyamoto Musashi describes it as follows:
"The face is calm, neither turned upwards or downwards; the brow is unwrinkled; the chin neither stuck out or drawn in too much; the neck is equally straight and the spinal column full of energy. Below the dropped shoulders the body is perfectly relaxed; spinal column in its place; the legs, from the knees to the ankles are firmly set on the ground".
In Aikido, this is a supple, balanced posture which allows free movement and a internal energy like electricity ready to strike, full of energy, primed, ready. Like a can of Coke that has been shaken. Not apparent from viewing the can but pull the ring pull and it will burst forth!
