I have a few books I recommend but not too many. The ones I recommend tend to be for background and history or concepts rather than photos of techniques etc.
I would be interested if anyone else has any comments to make on their recommended books etc before I add further.

Hi Daniel, personally I'd be careful around dvd's etc purely because of the different styles that may lead you in a different direction to the one we follow. I've seen a lot of different things that can cause a conflict with the way we learn. I'll post a couple of youtube links to some videos that are really helpful with weapon work, especially when practicing at home.
Book wise there are a few that are definitely worth having, or at least I enjoy them! Budo- Morihei Ueshiba, is great, for obvious reasons! Dynamic Aikido - Gozo Shioda is another good one, especially for looking at 'base' forms and techniques. For just a general good read, not strictly a 'technical' book I think a few of us will agree that Angry White Pyjamas - Robert Twigger is a great read, definitely helps to fuel the fire and makes a 6 hour training day sound like a walk in the park!! I wouldn't get too bogged down with books, nothing beats getting on the mat or outside with weapons and going through it for real, but these are the ones I find the most beneficial.

I recommend a few books mainly for background, history and concepts and to stimulate mechanical memory (and names!). Dynamic Aikido by Gozo Shioda Traditional Aikido by Morihiro Saito (this has been out of print for a long time - an alternative still widely available but not as good as the original set is Takemusu Aikido by Saito). Budo by Morihei Ueshiba (not a book for beginners in any sense of the word but it is a key you will find very helpful to unlock doors many years down the road of your Aikido study).

The "Traditional Aikido" books by Morihiro Saito Shihan are rather rare and expensive these days. I had the full set years ago but sold them (silly me). Now I have just Volume 1 (but feel free to get me the others my faithful, kind and benevolent ko-hai). Interesting that the original books from Saito Shihan are called "Traditional Aikido" and not by the later, more modern "Takemusu Aikido" or "Iwama ryu Aikido". Iwama Ryu and to a lesser extent Takemusu Aikido were titles given to Saito Shihan's Aikido by other organisations to differentiate(primarily the Aikikai). But that a whole other story for a different post.

Reached the maximum attachment level. Here are the final 2 of the 5 volumes and the newer recent publications of his books "Takemusu Aikido".

For beginners this is also a worthwhile book:
"Aikido. A beginner's guide" by Dunken Francis.

I think they're £38 each! However they are an excellent collection.
